Land of Seven Sisters

History and Facts

  • The seven sister states are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Megahalya, Tripura, Nagaland Mizoram and Manipur.

  • This area in past was known as North-East frontier.

  • The area is strategic important to India as it borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China and Tibet.

  • After Indepndent there were 3 states which covered that area.

  • Manipur and Tripura were Independent states while Assam province was direct under British rule.

  • This region has mainly tribal population with each tribe having their own culture, art, dance, music and life style.

  • It is considered that Tibeto-Burman tribes entered through Burma in this area around 1000 B.C.

  • The region is heavily forested and having plentiful of rainfall.

  • Jyoti Prasad Saikia Journalist in Tripura coined the word Land of Seven Sisters.

  • The population of this area is around 38.6 million as per 2001 census.
